Today this gaggle of cuteness if being reunited.
Last post for the week…Love of friends.
Today my dear friends are reuniting in the city and I can not wait. This group of gals in the above picture will forever have a special place in my heart. We have endured unspeakable traumas together, teaching, a certain non profit, and living in a crummy dorm together in 105 degrees. Some have moved, while others have stayed, but this weekend the gang will be back together (first time since July).
We are all so very weird and different but make so much sense.
California, Chicago, NYC.
I have so many amazing friends who have come into my life through a number of different ways. I could post so many more pictures but due to the celebrations of this weekend I am going to keep it focused. However, its hard for me not to throw these in for good measure.
I miss this one.
Love this one.
I of course can not mention LOVE without talking about the love of my life, Stephen. I was asked to guest blog on A Breakfast Serial for Valentines Day so I am going to actually reference that post as my tribute to Stephen. I could list every reason why I love Stephen here but I am not going to. I will say though that I am always referenced as the activist in our relationship but I LOVE that Stephen is actually a quiet rebel. Not many people know this about him, but I do and I love it.
We normally don’t do much for Vday but this year we actually went on a date. We didn’t wait for Valentines Day to celebrate because there was a magnificent opportunity to celebrate our love and we had to take it! The historic Music Box theater teamed up with Sound Opinions from NPR to show The Graduate. The Graduate is one of my all time favorite films so we just jumped on the opportunity to view the film in theaters. The Graduate is my love for many reasons. I identify with the lost identity of Ben. I think Elaine is beautiful and want all of her clothes. I love the historical transition the film represents. I could not love Simon and Garfunkel any more than I do. All around perfect film.
the uncertainty and trust is perfect.
We paired our film with sushi, another love in our lives. Perfect date. Perfect husband.
6.5 years down, a bagillion more to go.
I LOVE that Valentines Day has been reclaimed by activists to raise awareness around sexual assault and domestic violence. I love that in conjunction to all of the performances of Vagina Monologues happening around the city there will also be a flash mob to raise awareness. One Billion Rising is a global effort to take control back for women and empower all to end violence. If you are in Chicago and want to help an amazing cause please join the movement! Valentines Day: 12pm: Daley Plaza.
I will be there in heart and spirit. My students and I are doing our own campaign.
Love is support. Love is listening. Love is not hurting others.

Part 2 in the Valentines Day series.
Valentines Day is awesome because it allows you to show gratitude and love for others but I don’t think we show enough love for ourselves. If we don’t love our self we cant participate in healthy relationships. SO… Why not celebrate loving ourselves!
When I think about loving ourselves I think about all of the things we can do to nurture and celebrate ourselves.
For me loving yourself comes in the following ways:
Taking personal time
Saying no when you want to
Being free of guilt
Being proud without affirmation
Doing good for others
How do you love yourself?
I also can’t stop thinking about something one of my yoga instructors recently said. She brought up karma and the idea that we wait for karma to happen. She pointed out that the goodness that comes from karma doesn’t come in weeks or days but actually comes instantly. Doing good for others is an instant dose of karma because the “good” that comes back to you is the feeling of knowing that you just helped someone. I think this form of karma is a healthy dose of awesome and love.
Let’s kick off a week of love in honor of Valentine’s Day.
Cookies and Love, Perfect Pair
I actually don’t ever do much for the holiday but I do think its always awesome to stop and think about who and what you love. The posts this week will be dedicated to this very idea.
First in the series is simple sugar cookies. The cookies really aren’t the focus though. Instead, my focus is on my deep love I have for my students. They are the most resilient, challenging, kind, weird, and wonderful people I know. I made them cookies this week because they showed so much dedication and unrelenting effort despite some crazy energy in the building and neighborhood.
I view my students as partners in a revolution and I am so proud of the growth they have made both intellectually and socially.
Gallery Walk on the state of birth control in our country. They were so into the lesson. I heard cursing under their breath… I was very okay with this.
I love how open my seniors are to new ideas about women’s health. They are eager to shift the way gender is constructed and I could not be happier. I am in love with the thirst for knowledge my freshman have shown in World History. This week I heard unprompted debates amongst them regarding the Rape of Nanking. I love the dedication that my juniors have shown for their businesses. We have begin to tackle tough material and they have embraced it with enthusiasm. I love them all.
Its always fun to show love with cookies.
